The 1956 masterpiece, called The Study for Portrait II, was sold to an anonymous bidder on Thursday evening. The painting had been expected to fetch nearer $23m when it was offered for sale at Christie's in London. "It is the most important work from Bacon's Pope series to appear on the market," said Pilar Ordovas, the director of contemporary art at Christie's. "The Study for Portrait II established Bacon's position as one of the leading artistic figures of the 20th century." The previous record for a Bacon painting was set in 2006 when Version No 2 of Lying Figure with Hypodermic Syringe sold for $15m at Sotheby's in New York.

Museum gets new life

LEE Langston-Harrison hadn't been director of the Museum of Culpeper History long when she noticed something about people who visited with children. Though the adults enjoyed the various displays and artifacts, ranging from Civil War gear to memorabilia of hometown baseball Hall of Famer Eppa Rixey, they seldom stayed longer than 10 or 15 minutes when they had youngsters in tow. "We got the idea of creating several children's corners, each with hands-on activities in something that related to the exhibits," said Langston-Harrison, who came to the museum in late fall from Montpelier, the Orange County home of James Madison. With children engaged in activities that included making their own dinosaurs, grinding Indian corn and dressing up in Colonial garb, the museum staff noticed parents were able to take in much more of the museum than ever before.

Marketing paper a fine art

A JAUNT in France sewed the seeds for artist Shellie Conway to design stylish stationery inspired by the beautiful paperie shops she discovered in Paris. Lantern Paper produces limited edition ranges of journals, pencils, note cards, tile magnets, tote bags and coin purses. Using cloth stitching, blind embossing, foil stamping, soft leathers, woven hemp and damask labels, each piece has a distinct look and feel. Ms Conway has been running Lantern Paper since 1989 and her wares are sold through 150 retailers, ranging from art gallery stores and book shops and, most recently, Officeworks. At Officeworks she has created a "store within a store" where an entire range of her stationery is displayed together. "It's a fantastic thing to be able to design a whole range. Too often ranges are split," she said. After studying fine arts at the Victorian College of the Arts, majoring in print making, Ms Conway began her journey to success after becoming an artist in residence at Cite des Artes in Paris for three months.

Art unshackled from the word

Question: I am having trouble with the Word Art tool in Microsoft Word that lets one create sophisticated lettering. When I create one of these elegant text-graphics designs, there is a problem moving them. They get attached to the text surrounding them, and when you move the Word Art, all of that text follows with it. I have been using word-processing and layout software functions for a dozen-plus years and have never once wanted an inserted graphic element tied to the text. This is more than annoying.- Judi Elliott A: Helping you solve this problem delights me, because it also lets me tell other readers about the sweet things one can do with this Word Art tool that Microsoft has so successfully hidden inside Word. The class, appropriate for all skill levels, is a series of exercises designed to improve drawing skills through values, edges and accurate observation of head casts and live models. Beginning with monochromatic studies in charcoal or oil, students progress at their own pace. Wallace-Lloyd, represented by Shoalwater Cove Gallery in Ilwaco, Wash., and The Buttery in Cannon Beach, believes any artist can benefit from these exercises, whether drawing a tree, a flower or a face. "It's like sharpening your saw, tuning your car or playing scales on a piano," she said. The collection of artworks from the 1950s to the late 1980s includes two of Pedersen's masterpieces - "Out in the Wide World," from 1988, and "Red Firebird," from 1972. Pedersen is known for colourful fantasy paintings featuring horses and birds. His wife, Sidsel Ramson, formally handed over the works Tuesday to the Statens Museum for Kunst in downtown Copenhagen. The 93-year-old artist was not able to attend the ceremony because of health reasons. Gallery director Allis Helleland said she was proud to receive the works "by one of Denmark's most important, modern artists." The canvases are set to go on display at the museum in June.

The Fine Art of Distortion

James Esber developed a fascination for distorted imagery 20 years ago, shortly after he moved to New York to start his art career. As a newcomer to the city, Esber spent much of his time making drawings. During that transitional period, he ran across a book about anamorphic projection - the distortion of objects so that they appear normal only from a particular view or through the use of a special lens or mirror. The book inspired him to start making distorted renderings of images. This approach has been central to his art ever since. Iconic or emotionally charged images from the Internet and other sources serve as starting points for his drawings and paintings. When he took an art class at Stanton High School in the late '60s, he learned about photography and mixed-media art. Now they really had his attention. He found out about a visual arts program at Florida Junior College (as it was then called) and quickly earned an associate of arts degree. He was hooked by it all: print-making, painting, drawing, developing his own film in the magic of the darkroom. At the same time it is continuing to examine a proposal by the University of New England, which is offering to assume responsibility for the financially troubled New England Regional Art Museum which houses the painting. Mayor Peter Ducat says while council last night agreed not to defer the court action, it is still open to suggestions from the community to resolve the future of the museum and its iconic Hinton and Coventry art collections. "We've still the university proposal to examine, we've still got very concerned citizens, keen citizens, who want to look at other options," he said. The museum wants to give visitors a higher-tech, more interactive experience when it opens the new wing in the spring of 2008. The wing will be in the 80-year-old former Planters National Bank building being renovated across the street from the museum at the corner of William and Princess Anne streets. Area residents can get a sneak peek at the new exhibit plan at a meeting at the University of Mary Washington on Feb. 7. The plans developed by Quatrefoil, a Maryland-based consultant, include three videos that will run continuously, two interactive computer stations and multiple hands-on experiences to connect people with the city's history.

First-Ever Auction Dedicated to African-American Fine Art at Swann ...

The auction contains a veritable who's who of important African American artists, and includes some of the scarcest and most important examples of their work. For instance, it is very rare to find complete sets of Jacob Lawrence's prints. This sale offers his first and last major series, both based on paintings made by the artist early in his career: "The Legend of John Brown," portfolio with complete text, printed folders and 22 color screenprints, 1977, and The Life of Toussaint L'Ouverture, a collection of 15 color screenprints, 1986-97 (each series estimated $130,000 to $160,000). Also included is Lawrence's Eight Studies for the Book of Genesis, 1989-90 ($40,000 to $60,000). Noteworthy prints by other artists include several very scarce examples, such as Dox Thrash's Old Barns, aquatint, 1937-38 ($5,000 to $8,000); Charles White's poignant Awaiting His Return, lithograph, 1946 ($15,000 to $25,000); and Elizabeth Catlett's Negro Woman, lithograph, 1945 ($8,000 to $12,000).

Taiwan art museum ready to reopen

TAIPEI, Taiwan (Reuters) -- The world's leading Chinese art museum, a palatial compound in Taiwan, will reopen next month with more display space for imperial art and amenities aimed at luring an expected surge in visitors from long-time rival China. After almost two years of remodeling, the National Palace Museum in Taipei will open on February 8 its entire 24,000 square meters of exhibit halls that now include more snacking areas, a new lobby and a school, Director Lin Mun-lee told Reuters. The museum is known for its unique stash of 654,500 imperial-art treasures brought to Taiwan at the end of the Chinese civil war in 1949 to keep them away from the Communists. Because more people look at old art more often if it's in a modern setting, the museum remodeled almost every hall, a spokeswoman said.

Painting a picture of education

FITCHBURG -- Kendra Engel's fifth-graders will soon venture into senior centers and nursing homes, seeking memories of the Great Depression. Students will interview senior citizens who lived through the Depression, then paint the seniors' portraits and write biographies based on their stories. Engel teaches at Fitchburg Arts Academy, which is tucked away on the fourth floor of the Academy Middle School building, on Academy Street. "Our focus is both learning about the arts, and learning through the arts," said Les Edinson, FAA's principal. The school has 140 fifth- through eighth-graders, 10 full-time teachers, a guidance counselor and a principal. FAA, formerly the Museum Partnership School, became a "pilot school" this past fall. That means the school's governing board -- comprised of teachers, parents and community members -- develops FAA's operating budget and decides how to run the school.

Art museum announces new executive director

Steven A. Nash, who most recently served as director of the new Nasher Sculpture Center in Dallas since January 2001, will take the helm in April, after current Executive Director Janice Lyle retires. Dr. Nash will strengthen our position nationally and internationally as a leading arts institution, Harold J. With his background at the most senior levels at leading art institutions in Buffalo, San Francisco and Dallas, his numerous publications, his lectures and the major exhibitions he has organized, he will be uniquely qualified to lead the Palm Springs Art Museum into the 21st century.

Fine Art of Distinctions

NEW YORK -- What is intellectual property? Who owns it -- and who deserves to get paid for it? Playgoers and music lovers don't often have occasion to ask such rarefied questions, but they've lately become important to the producers of a Broadway musical and the members of a British rock group. At first glance these two cases may appear unrelated -- but I wouldn't be surprised if they both become landmarks in the evolution of copyright law. Witty, reclusive Emily Dickinson, writing volumes of brilliant poetry without leaving her room, fit that category 150 years ago, and so do two impressive figures of recent times, Thelonius Monk and J.D. Salinger. In that company we can also place Joseph Cornell (1903-1972), who spent 40 years making beautiful glass-fronted boxes that transformed borrowed images and objects into fresh realities. Cornell didn't enjoy exhibitions of his work (he thought curators chose the wrong pieces) and hated any mention of his personality (he was angry if someone referred to his intense shyness in print).

Boy Hit by Train After Painting Grafitti

NEW YORK - A 13-year-old boy had just finished painting graffiti near railroad tracks when he was struck and killed by a commuter train, authorities and friends said Saturday.A Long Island Rail Road train hit Ari Kraft between stations in Queens during the evening rush hour Friday, police said. The collection is called "America‘s most singular sensations" in the current issue of Smithsonian magazine. The exhibit of 156 objects was selected from more than 3 million items. The counter came from the former store in downtown Greensboro where four students at North Carolina A&T State University staged a sit-in to integrate the whites-only restaurant. The sit-in movement soon spread across the nation. Although the lunch counter went on display in 1995 at the Museum of American History, it was put into the smaller exhibit when the history museum closed for renovations in September.

Collecting predictions for ’07 FINE ART & ANTIQUES DR. Trends are temporary, but objects that highlight history hold their value. Like history, art history repeats itself. Don't you wish you bought up all that mid-century modern, 1950s-1960s-era furniture that was so accessible and cheap in the 1990s? Today, those Eames chairs, Knoll tables and Sunburst clocks are going for sky-high prices to collectors celebrating 50 years since the mid-20th-century mark. Last year, I advised folks to avoid amassing a diverse assembly of unrelated works of art or antiques (also known as "eclectic collecting") and to collect a few specific types of items. Let's see how my 2006 predictions panned out. In January of 2006, I repeated my 2005 prediction about collecting Benjamin Franklin memorabilia.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://artofpainting.blogspot.com/2007/01/collecting-predictions-for-07-fine-art.html' title='Collecting predictions for ’07 FINE ART & ANTIQUES DR. There was, to put it simply, an awful lot to see. This was thanks, in part, to the constant appearance of new galleries. Mary Mary, outgrowing its origins as an artist-run concern operating in domestic spaces, became a fully-fledged commercial gallery. Ubu, though still based in the front room of a flat, brought Becky Beasley to the attention of Bloomberg New Contemporaries. And, even at the close of the year, new spaces continued to pop up. The latest is Washington Garcia, a gallery of no fixed abode devoted to showing work by young artists in unconventional spaces. It launched with a show by Sigga Bjorg Sigurdardottir in a south-side apartment. Lt. Col. Brad Derrig, who flew the alert mission over the nation's capital on Sept. 11, 2001, piloted the last flight aboard the retired aircraft Tuesday. He called the cross-country trip a historic moment for the 119th Fighter Wing, known as the Happy Hooligans. "It's a neat thing for the unit to have one of the airplanes for everybody to see rather than just wasting away in the desert in Arizona," Derrig said before taking off from Fargo for the McChord Air Force Base Museum near Tacoma, Wash. Car keys generally jingle when there's only 2:48 left in a game that's run away. A Hebron guard drove the lane, in the 70th annual South County tournament Friday night at Kouts. The Hawks trailed. Eric Spaulding, a 6-foot-2 junior forward for Morgan Twp., planted his feet and took the charge. Then, he jumped up and pumped his fist. Exactly one minute later, Spaulding again took a charge, but a slap foul was called first. This tournament, and the way the players compete, gives a new definition to a Spaulding Burger.Morgan won 48-37 and Spaulding scored a cool 13."It's tradition," said Spaulding, with blood sprinkled on his white shorts and top.

SA's art heritage shame

SOUTH Africa's art heritage is being lost to the country because the government budget for buying art has been slashed to the point where the entire annual allocation for purchases cannot cover the cost of any single major work. This week it was revealed that the Iziko National Gallery which houses the country's national collection has such a small acquisitions budget that it is not even trying to buy the works of great South African artists that are fetching record prices on the international market. The budget of just R140 000 is just more than half the R240 000 it was 20 years ago in 1986. Curator of paintings and sculpture, Hayden Proud, said this week the "paltry" budget meant that there was very little hope of building the gallery's collection of early black artists.

China National Academy of Chinese Painting set up

The academy grew out of the Institute of Chinese Painting, which was founded in 1981 with painting master Li Keran serving as the first president. These images are vital records of our lives. Like our most precious and valuable art and antiques in our homes, family photos require proper preservation. Have you ever thought about how best to protect your family photographs? Restoration and preservation are common in the vocabulary of most museum professionals. Yet, in the everyday world of collecting and protecting family heirlooms, we regular folks need to be concerned largely with the concept of preservation. Restoring a piece of our personal history requires the expertise of a professional and trained restorer. However, preserving our treasured family heirlooms is a task that requires our attention, and you can do much of the work yourself to maintain these irreplaceable objects.

UK: Lobby successfully advocates for Jewish art

LONDON- The Jewish lobby pressured the British parliament, resulting in a change to a bill supported by the British cabinet to make it easier for museums and galleries to borrow works of art from other countries. There's a secret side to her which she has consciously hidden from the world. Sushmita is also a painter! Painting is her hobby and she sometimes gifts her works of art to her friends too. But now Sush says her artistic skills have been put to good use. She has auctioned one of her best paintings to raise money for Imran Khan's cancer hospital. Sushmita's painting titled 'Ibaadat' was auctioned for Rs 25 lakhs and the proceeds have gone to the hospital. "I paint, but for myself and sometimes for my friends. This is the first time that I put up my paintings for an auction to raise money for charity. "This is fun," said 9-year-old Evan Launchbaugh of Monrovia. "They have a lot of interesting stuff and it's a really great place to visit. I usually stay home on Saturdays." Children were shown by museum curator Alycia Wood, along with staff and volunteers, how to craft simple toys such as button spinners, leavings dolls and paper-bag puppets - most based on vintage playthings from the turn of the 20th century and earlier. Arcadia resident Valerie Simola, 63, brought her grandchildren, Evan and Kelly Launchbaugh, with the hopes of creating fond memories as well as creating a family bond. "I saw it in the city newsletter and put it on the calendar," said Simola, "I'm anxious to look at the rest of the museum, as well as the toy exhibit, but I want them to have some fun first." Tots gathered with their mothers around work tables crafting simple dolls from colorful leftover fabric or yarn.

Fine Art Scene

Fort Ward Museum, 4301 W. In the gardens outside, artists and their families drank tea, smoked and chatted. It was a beautiful morning, and until the arrival of the van, it had been a productive one, too. The mood was shattered as eight uniformed officers from the urban management office climbed out of the vehicle and swiftly plastered posters on walls around the Beijing International Art Camp that warned it would be demolished the next month because it was an illegal structure. They may have been there only a few minutes, but the officers ensured little work would be done for the rest of the day. A month and a half later, only the tattered remnants of the notices remain, but an air of nervousness still pervades the Suojiacun village camp.

Lindsay Wildlife Museum charging teens to volunteer

WALNUT CREEK - Feeding animals, cleaning cages and teaching others about critters at the Lindsay Wildlife Museum is fun and educational for teens who volunteer at the nonprofit facility. It's also costly. To help offset budget deficits racked up in the last two years, the civic-minded youths must pay $450 a year for the privilege of helping out at the museum, on top of a $65 annual family membership. The 592 percent increase in "interpretive guide" fees from $65 annually is excessive and could burden families with modest incomes or more than one child in the program, some say. Loren Behr, the museum's new director, said the increase is necessary to keep the teen program afloat. Besides, families would pay similar amounts for other activities such as music lessons, said Behr, who admits the museum needs volunteers to operate.

Art on the menu in Madrid

One of the world's leading art festivals will take place next February in Madrid and will attract up to 200,000 visitors, if previous years are anything to go by.Those looking for a cultured holiday in could choose to flight to Madrid and take in the 26th annual International Contemporary Art Fair of Madrid, known as Arco. Employees, who spoke with STOI on the condition of anonymity, on Saturday said a recently-bought sound system which was left on by the CISF personnel after they finished rehearsal for a cultural event at around 10.30 pm might have caused the fire at the museum. The museum had bought the sound system costing Rs 3.5 lakh about a week ago. When the securitymen finished practising for the week-long cultural programme in connection with the 121st birth anniversary of the museum founder Mir Yousuf Ali Khan, Salar Jung-III, they reportedly switched off the lights in the auditorium, but forgot to turn off the sound system.

Salmon farming is a fine art in Norway

BERGEN (NORWAY): The cold wind feels like a blunt knife scraping the face. And when Marine Express — a brown and white speedboat — moves into high gear, it only gets worse. But the officials of Norwegian Seafood Export Council (NSEC) taking us to a salmon farm near Austevoll group of islands look pleased. "It's the hottest October in these parts in a 100 years,"one of them says. And it doesn't worry him that it could be a sign of global warming. The speedboat drives past hundreds of picture postcard islands. We edge past old trading posts where liquor and fish were sold a century ago. The view for keeps. Breeding salmon is both pure science and fine art in these parts of fjord-filled Norway. At the farm, one sees salmon jump around in closed enclosures like playful dolphins.

TMCA to open Persian painting biennial today

LONDON, October 30 (IranMania) -The Sixth Biennial of Persian Painting opens at the Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art today evening, MNA reported. That would have meant no trip to the 2006 Toronto International Film Festival from his home in northeastern South Africa where he and his wife are foster parents to dozens of children orphaned by the AIDS epidemic. No chance, too, to experience the release of the movie based largely on his life story, or hang with new friends, actor Tim Robbins and director Phillip Noyce, or to watch a 32-year-old actor from New Jersey named Derek Luke generate Oscar buzz for his performance as the Patrick Chamusso of a quarter-century ago.

Faculty art show

What: The visual arts teachers from the nine high schools in the Glendale Union High School district are exhibiting their artwork at the Glendale Adult Center, 5970 W. Lawyers for the Beaverbrook Art Gallery in Fredericton called witnesses yesterday at an arbitration hearing that will rule on who actually owns roughly $100 million worth of paintings and sculptures that have been in the gallery since it opened in 1959. The Beaverbrook U.K. Foundation, an organization established by Beaverbrook to oversee his charitable works, is claiming that 133 of the most valuable artworks in the gallery are only on loan. A Beaverbrook grandson heads the foundation. But Beaverbrook's nephew, Allan Aitken on Montreal, told the hearing that the gallery was a labour of love for his uncle.

Jewelry store sponsors art contest

Robert Miller Fine Jewelry in Howell has a beautiful new look, thanks to some art students in Livingston County. It has to have a heart and soul." As we might once have needed to visit Ashland, Carmel or San Francisco in order to partake in the visual or performing arts, we now have enough opportunities within our own Napa County to meet our cultural needs.Locally we are blessed with art studios, galleries and performing groups such as the Napa Valley Symphony that not only bring opportunities of rich pleasure to local residents, but also provide a key element of cultural enrichment to visiting tourists.

Group art effort a thing of beauty

No, we're not talking about the Michigan's Adventure amusement park, in Muskegon. We're talking about an amazing piece of art. Through a special grant from the Grand Rapids Foundation, seventh- and eighth-grade students designed, developed and created a sculpture and mural installation featuring the four seasons of Michigan. Each side of the free-standing sculpture features fun things to do and see in Michigan. The school art project began with research. "The students wrote letters to the Michigan Tourism Association to request brochures about the state," Burton Middle School art teacher Joanne Perko said. "We used the pictures in the brochures to help us brainstorm what we might want to include on the sculpture." Once the students determined what they wanted to highlight, they handpainted dozens of 6-inch tiles and fired them.

Society: Taking wing: modern add to Art Institute

The Art Institute of Chicago was founded in 1879 and opened on its current site in 1893, built on rubble from the Great Chicago Fire. Its collection now contains more than 300,000 items spanning 5,000 years from cultures around the world.
